MLO 2: Language and Linguistic Knowledge
The student develops an understanding of the structure of the Spanish language and is able to use an appropriate level of formality according to the situation, whether in writing or in speech.
The student completes between two and six courses (depending on his or her choice of emphasis, as either language and linguistics knowledge or literary and cultural knowledge) related to the Spanish language and linguistics. These courses deal with: the sound system of Spanish, the history of Spanish, advanced grammar, Spanish-English translation, a general introduction to Spanish linguistics, Spanish for professional application (medical, legal, etc. spheres), composition and conversation.

The courses that I have completed for this MLO include SPAN 301, SPAN 302, and SPAN 303. Since my emphasis is literature and culture I have only taken 3 courses. In SPAN 301 I learned a lot about grammar and writing. We analyzed the structure of the language and compared it to English, in order to be able to differentiate the two languages. We learned about which tense to use and how to conjugate appropriately. I SPAN 302, we learned about the history of the language and how it has evolved from Latin. Dr. Zapata showed us the similarities that it has to other languages and how other languages have influenced Spanish. Another course that has met this MLO has been SPAN 303. This class was very similar to SPAN 301, although a bit more challenging. Both of the classes were taught by Dr. Casado-Fuente where he reinforced everything we had learned along with new material.
I found SPAN 302 to be an extremely interesting class. I guess you can say I was very naive going into this class. I appreciated the Spanish language, but I never imagnied it had a history, I didn’t think any language did. For me, a language had been passed down for centuries and nothing changed, if it changed it wouldn’t continue to be Spanish. Well, boy was I wrong. Dr. Zapata thought us the history of the language. With that, came the history of Spain itself. All the different inhabitants the peninsula had and how they still have an impact of the language today. The Arab conquest was extremely interesting. The most important part that I learned was the Latin to Spanish conversions. I have always enjoyed math. Having Dr. Zapata teach us the way the language morphed was like having a little math lesson, with letters. That’s how I saw it in my eyes and made it so much more interesting. Definitely cannot for forget what I learned from this class.
