World Language and Culture: 300 Major ProSeminar
Fall 2014
This course introduces students to the majors in Spanish, Japanese Language and Culture, or World Language and Cultures. Students acquire knowledge and understanding needed to fulfill Major Learning Outcomes for the programs. Students identify and work with a major advisor to develop individual learning plans. The course examines opportunities in related professional and career paths, including graduate education and teaching credential preparation.
This class was an introductory class to the major. It completed one of the five core requirements . The most important thing we did in this class was create this online portfolio. This is where we will have to record all the information that will benefit us in the future. We had a few sessions on how to work this website and to know all the data that we must provide. This wasn’t a “semester long” project. We will have to use this tool from now until we graduate. In this website we were required to publish our resumes and ILPs. It was a challenge to get a perfect resume. It is very different when you are making one for the “real world” (as opposed to one for McDonalds). The Individual learning plan was an academic plan which we filled out in a short meeting with our advisor. In my case, I met with Dr. Gabriela Zapata and we decided that I wanted to focus on literature, rather than linguistics. She walked me through the classes I would need to take in order to be on track. I found out that I am on track to graduate for the Spring of 2016 which was what I had hoped for. I also was informed of the different travel abroad opportunities that we have and the financial aid that is available. This class was a great introductory class because it allowed me to meet with all the different teachers that I will have in my next classes. They also shared with us stories about their past students and where they are now. Gave us a good idea for what we wanted to do with our future. I would hope to have an opportunity to meet more with the Japanese Students which is why I am excited for the second culture requirement. I am excited for what is to come in the rest of my upper division learning and hope to fallow my ILP.
