There are two pathways by which this outcome can be fulfilled:
- The student completes between two and six courses (depending on his or her choice of emphasis, as either in language and linguistics knowledge or literary and cultural knowledge) in Hispanic literature, culture or society. General areas to choose from are: literature, the social sciences (anthropology, geography, history, political systems), art history, music history, religion or other non-Spanish courses specific to Hispanic culture or society.
- With prior approval and guidance from WLC faculty, the student may opt for a more individual pathway. He or she may choose to independently study, research and analyze four of the following areas as they are reflected in the civilization or national culture of the language chosen to study: architecture, dance, dress, fiction, healing processes, high art, issues of gender and racial equity, music, national history, poetry, political systems, popular art, religious beliefs, theatre.
For MLO 3, I chose to take the first pathway. I have taken four course that cover this ability. For literature I have taken SPAN 310 and SPAN 425, as for culture I have completed SPAN 308 and SPAN 309. During the literature classes I got the opportunity to learn about some great authors. Many of them have been translated into many different languages, which make me proud of them. I got to experience children's literature and Mexican literature. I found both of these classes fascinating. They have given me a great view into what latin america has to offer.Through literature I was also able to learn about different times in history in a more entertaining way. As for he cultural aspect, that came from SPAN 308 and SPAN 309. In SPAN 308, I got to learn about the indigenous population more closely. I had always known about them but Dr. Andrade made us dig deep into their culture to be able to somewhat understand what the indigenous belief and customs were. In SPAN 309, we learned a lot about history. With history also came traditions and strategies of how the people prevailed. It was interesting to hear about countries standing up for themselves as one.I learned the great unity that Latin america has amongst eachother.
