SPAN 301S: Service Learning in the Chicano/Latino Community
Dr. Rafael Gomez
This course is part of your Spanish language learning experience, and offers you the opportunity to interact in a personal way with members of the local Latino community, thereby enriching your understanding of Hispanic cultures and the Spanish language. As a community-based learning experience, the course provides students with career-related experience working collaboratively with community agencies to address community concerns / issues.
This class covers one of the CSUMB GE requirements; D4: Upper Division service learning. Having taken the lower division class, I thought I knew what to expect and was genuinely excited for this class. In lower division I had worked with kids, this time I decided to work with the Central Coast Citizenship Project. Which helps adults study for their citizenship test. For this class, we had to reflect on ourselves and our community. In my opinion, my community has done so much for me, I personally enjoy being able to give back. We had to do a community scan on the city where our site was located, mine was Salinas Ca. I feel as if I "knew" Salinas, I had been there. Once I started the project I was able to see the city in a completely different way. Dr. Gomez recommended for us to keep a diary. By writing my reflections I was able to apply the course materials into what was happening during my volunteer hours.
