SPAN 308: History and Culture of Aztlan: Southwestern United States
Dr. Adrian Andrade
Covers the story of indigenous peoples of the southwestern United States: Aztlan.
This course was taught online. I had previously taken an online class which surpassed my expectations. I hoped that the class with Dr. Andrade would be just as pleasant. The topic sounded quite interesting. My freshman year I joined MEChA and learned about Aztlan. I was anxious to learn more. Aztlan refers to the mythical place where some Aztecs claimed to come from. It was in current area of Southwest US. It was the Promised Land. Dr. Andrade presented us with information from the native people of this area. We learned about their gods and their rituals. We continued in a chronological order; following the conquest and Spanish invasion. We were able to share all of our work with the rest of the class. He encouraged us to make comments on our work and pushed for online discussion. We talked about the Mexican Revolution, the US conquest, and lead up to the Chicano movement. I made my final project, an annotated bibliography of Rodolfo “Corky” Gonzales.
